Among Us (2017) Reviews
NOT a studio/artist/whomever affiliated review...
Sad that I have to note that but for these small films.... Gave it a shot despite the 4 rating and was pleasantly rewarded with a thoughtful and well done film. The acting is really pretty good all the way around, and like any really good supernatural movie there are a lot of questions, all the way to the end which I liked very much. Kudos! Not a ton of action here but if you'd rather think than watch 'action' or 'splatter' then you may well enjoy it!
If you like em spooky "Among Us"is a film for you!
Husband Wife played by Mark DiConzo/Katie Morrison are very damaged scared people running from their past. Elena Sanz proves to be the person to make them cope! Gary King Writer/Director has crafted a bloodless yet eerie spooky tale! Beautifully location shot in Maine really liked the music by Keneth Lampl & crisp editing of Jamie Cobb! A haunting film to watch & enjoy peeps!
Top Notch Supernatural Thriller
An excellent film that easily stands up to anything in the genre and stands well above most. Great atmosphere, inventive camera work ranging from chaotically wild to pristine stillness, immersive sound design and editing and excellent performances (esp. Mark DiConzo) filled with equal parts humor and melancholy. The chills are genuine along with the mood - an unsettling aura that plays off the believability of the characters and their portrayals bring a living quality to realistic dialog in a supernatural situation. King is a top notch director in any genre - I hope someday he connects to the wide audience his films deserve.
Errie and confusing...
Rented this off of my Play station 4 and it was one of those slow build-ups...but once it got going, it was a hair-raising on the back of your neck, sitting on the edge of your seat movies. I didn't find this movie cheesy and I found the acting to be quite good. Now about the confusing part. There are holes that were never explained. How did the boy come to be possessed? What did that woman see under the bed that made her freak so bad? And WHAT is up with that ending?! Not going to put any spoilers in this, but watch the movie and see if you don't agree with my frustration! All in all, it was a good movie with great scares and it definitely keeps you interested. Gave it a 7. Have a good night all.
Remote haunting
'Among Us' drew me into seeing it, with a cool poster/cover, an intriguing if unoriginal premise and as someone with a general appreciation for horror. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there, made me though apprehensive. It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws are here present in those films, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'Among Us' is terrible, with a plethora of problems (huge ones too) and doesn't do enough with its potential, which was hardly small. There is very little to recommend, but still a couple of qualities in 'Among Us'. Lets start with the positives. The scenery is atmospheric and spooky, despite the rather direct to video schlocky way it's generally shot (apart from the odd nice one) and edited, it was very clear that the film was made in a rush with no care or enthusiasm. Best thing about 'Among Us' is the lead actors doing what they can with characters not well fleshed out. Going on further to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and some of it feels vague, under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. Too many characters are too sketchy and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates. Making the film feel bland and forgettable with not enough heart put into it. The effects are ropy at best, the sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions) and all of the acting is lacking mostly. Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever, never recovering until finally getting slightly intriguing to the ending when something finally happens. Even the ending however is botched, due to being so incomplete-feeling, illogical and rushed. Found too many the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the supposedly creepy atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense. A lot of 'Among Us' has underdeveloped plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsetling There is not enough threat here and what there is of it tends to be used poorly, while the psychological elements are unimaginative and are more odd than scary, completely failing to show any sense of horror. Some badly sagging momentum too. The direction is leaden, got the sense their heart was not in it, and the music doesn't really fit. Concluding, terrible. 2/10 Bethany Cox
