Fantastic Film
Driftwood is an engaging and appealingly eerie film. Deftly manipulating mythopoeic conceits, whereby an older man takes in a young woman mysteriously washed ashore, the film creates a sort of fairy tale atmosphere. And as in the best fairy tales, the idyllic becomes increasingly sinister as the relationship between savior and saved becomes one of captor and captive. Unburdened by dialogue that might break the spell, the film manages to sustain tension - a testament to the captivating performances under the steady direction of Paul Taylor. Cerebral but totally accessible, it stays in your mind long after you've finished watching it. You can see why it won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative at the Slamdance Film Festival.
